Poems » Fire

Part 1

Flames are all around me.
I don't get burned,
Because I'm used to them.
Yet they slowly consume me.

I see people on the other side.
I try to get their attention,
As the temperature is unbearable.
Yet they don't notice me.

I didn't start this fire,
And I can't extinguish it.
So my only option
Is to not resist it.

Part 2

Then I saw her,
Just beyond the flames.
She was looking at me
With tears in her eyes.

We try to reach towards the other,
We try to hold hands,
But the flames
Are in the way.

She can't help me
From where she is.
She can only watch
The fire consume me.

Beside her,
I notice my closest friend.
Like my beloved,
He can only try to help.

I smile at them.
Weakly,
But I smile,
For their presence is welcome.

They give me
A reason to resist,
A reason to keep living,
A reason to be.

Notes/trivia

  • My first split poem. The first part can be read on its own, but the second one can't. I know it's easy to fix, but I won't change it for historical reasons.
